Is the Apple Silicon Mac Mini a game changer? I've been testing the 16GB version of the M1 Mac Mini, and I have some benchmarks and thoughts to share.

And the Geekbench 5 Metal score for this Mac is: 21982 (about 1000 behind the 5300M in the 16" MacBook Pro)!

The significance is simply that you are getting a lot of performance for your money. It’s got almost 6x the graphics performance of the Intel Mac Mini.

Mine arrives soon, and I am looking forward to all the goodness described -BUT- I need to run windows maybe 20% of my life, and I've been very happy doing that in Parallels Desktop, emulating Windows 10 and all the apps I need (I prefer to run Office and others there, as it seems more responsive there when using my Intel Macs). Turn on Coherence, and it's like they are all Mac apps. HOWEVER, PD is allegedly in beta, and Im not getting any warm fuzzies about being able to run Windows on M1 anytime soon. Can u do a vid on that? Ha! Thx.

@Constant Geekery thx for that. if I understood more about lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2020-12/threads.html I think id try to do it, but I can't find a tut (and without that, I think it would be beyond my capacity to figure it out...is he patching Apple's code somehow, thru command line, Xcode? huh? ha! This is another issue: unbootablity of CCC clones (or any other bootable drives, prior to M1?). That could be a problem, but I think the fix is in Big Sur somehow. As soon as I get my new mini, that's the first thing I have to figure out.

I will do a video when it’s a bit more mature. Krazy Ken did a video about Windows 10 for Arm running via QEMU on the M1. I expect it will happen, but it may be a while yet.

Would love to see if there's a way to connect more than 2 monitors to this Mac Mini WITHOUT using DisplayLink and a USB 3.0 adapter. OWC's Thunderbolt 4 Hub allows you to get up to 3 monitors (2 using the hub, 1 via HDM). Any chance two of these TB4 Hubs would allow for 4 displays and a 5th via HDMI? Sounds like overkill, but I have a feeling there are quite a few power users out there who might be interested in tossing their Trashcans in exchange for an M1 Mac Mini while they wait for Apple Silicon Mac Pros (and a Mac Pro Mini???). Might be an interesting video to see how you can beat the display limitations the M1 Mac Mini has right out of the box....

Really helpful review thanks. I have an i7 mac mini 32GB and my only complaint is the gpu performance. I'm almost ready to hit the buy now on a 16gb M1 mac mini with 256gb hard drive to save money as i have a number of external SSD's in fact i'm using one as my boot drive currently and only use the internal just as a place for downloads. I may hold off buying the M1 mini in the hope that next year one will come out with the M1x or M2 chip which should then have 4 usb-c ports as well

Would I be able to use my late 2015 27" 5K iMac with thunderbolt 2 as a target display powered by my Macbook Air M1 using sidecar?
Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
Your iMac doesn't support Apple's Target Display mode and Sidecar, as far as I know, only supports iPads as second display. There is a company called Luna Display that produce a hardware dongle that allows Mac-to-Mac usage, so this might be an option?

I read an article on MacRumors titled "Developers delves into reasons why Apple's M1 chip is so fast" by Juli Clover. The article says that the reason M1 is so fast is not because the M1 is a fast general purpose CPU like the Intel and AMD, but it is mainly because it is a collection of specialized dedicated hardware chips that does spedific work very fast. So instead of using the general purpose CPU to encrypt files, it actually has a specific hardware chip dedicated for encryption. Similarly, instead of using the general purpose CPU to encode/decode h.264 and h.265 video, the M1 has a chip for h.264 encoding/decoding on hardware and another chip to encode and decode h.265 video. The M1 has many other chips to hardware accelerate decompressing music, for processing images, etc. and all the most used functions by the power user. So therefore the M1 appears fast, but if there is a function that it does not have hardware acceleration for, then it will use its general purpose CPU to carry that function out at speeds comparable to Intel and AMD. And on top of that, it has unified memory to accelerate memory usage. So this is why the M1 appears as if it was a very fast general purpose CPU. Comparing M1 to Intel/AMD is like comoparing apples to oranges, one is a general purpose CPU and the other is a collection of very fast accelerators. Ultimately, the end result is impressive. "All" Intel/AMD has to do is build a hole bunch of instruction sets in hardware into their CPU for the most used computer functions to imitate the M1 (and also reduce power comsumption). All this time people are so impressed thinking that the M1 is a super fast general purpose CPU, but the magic is in building in specialized chips for acceleration. The weakness of the M1 will show when the M1 is called to do something it is not pre-selected to handle it in hardware acceleration. When the computer is programed to do something completely new (say encode video on a future/new h.266 encoding/decoding), it will struggle and fall behind faster general purpose Intel/AMD CPUs.

I liked the tone and pace of your review and Subscribed. I am interested to see if I can use Unreal Engine on the M1. It seems unlikely that Unreal will do an optimised version due to their spat with Apple so the Rosetta translated version might be the best we get for some time.
Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
Thank you 👍🏻 - I don't think the spat would necessarily stop Epic from optimising Unreal for the M1... if there's a market for it, they'd probably do it. IIRC, the court ruled that Apple couldn't block Unreal, which is a sensible decision. The whole thing looks like a PR exercise that has fizzled out of public interest, so I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with a settlement at some point and spin it into positive publicity for both companies. But yeah, you might be stuck with Rosetta for a bit.

I suspect like some others that Apple is saving some of the "cheese", such as more TB3 ports and eGPU support for a pro version of the Mini that will pull the pants down on this early version . They seem to be introducing a "Pro" version of nearly all products nowadays, so this isn't too far fetched.

I too have a Dell monitor (Dell S2721QS 27 Inch 4K) hooked up to my M1 mini with 16 GB, via USB-C and it works fine. And I was able to set up the computer with it attached. However, I have an external USB-3 drive hooked up via a dongle to the other USB-C port, and I have to unplug the port before I put it to sleep, otherwise the computer won't wake up. I can unplug it after it goes to sleep too, but it won't wake up with the drive plugged in. I like my problem better than I like your problem :-)

Unfortunately not. I think the issue is that the drivers are not ready. Drivers for eGPU do exist for Intel, so purge wrangler just patches the systems that Apple chose not to support.

Note: BlackMagic just updated the Disk Speed Test in the Apple App Store to now run Natively on the M1 Macs, as the old Disk Speed Test app benchmarks were running under Rosetta 2. I am now getting 3.2 MB/sec where as before I was getting about 2.4 MB/sec under the non-M1 optimized Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app. You may want to re-run your benchmark test using the new Native Disk Speed Test on M1 Macs.

Apple usage of UMA eliminates the need to copy any data to the GPU. In addition, soldering the RAM chips just next to the CPU also shaves few nanoseconds from the memory access time. These techniques are not new nor an invention of Apple. However, it seems that both Intel and AMD can't implement them without any radical changes to their architectures and board designs. I'm actually very excited about Apple taking this route (although I own no product of Apple) and I'm expecting their next (higher end) chips to simply humiliate Intel's and AMD's offerings.

And, does RAM matter in M1? Also, how about the internal storage, is 256gb enough? My dad is planning to get me a replacement for my old Vaio and im really eyeing on the new macbooks. I mainly need it for school stuff as well as doing some photo and video edits, and listening to music.

@Constant Geekery sounds like 256gb will be sufficient. I would probably be working with office, adobe pdf reader, netflix, spotify or apple music. Also, i might installing games. Im not really a hardcore gamer nor an expert, i just like to play casually on my free time. The thing is i want my files to be in my laptop and easily open it when needed than plugging hard drives. But i think 256gb will manage.
Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
We haven't got a Pro coming - just the Air. Hopefully we can answer the question on RAM. With regard to storage, 256GB is OK for a system disk - it's all I need because I use external storage and cloud for all my files. Unless you're planning to store loads of videos and photos, or downloading the entire Logic sound library, I'd say 256GB is probably OK for most people. I've installed Office365, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro (no sound libraries yet), Affinity Photo & Designer, and a few other smaller apps, and I have 164GB available. Hope that helps.

I agree but i have a big problem with Big Sur on an intel macbook pro. (Early 2015 13 inch) The system told me that my battery needed service but that isn't true. Big Sur was also unable to display the battery health under the settings and it was draining very very fast. The diagnostic tool said that my battery had no problems so i downgraded to Catalina and everything is fine now. So don't upgrade your intel macs just yet.

At this moment in time, reliability is difficult to judge. House Contents insurance will take care of theft. All in all, initial cost will be just shy of £1000 for machine plus AppleCare. I can easily stay within Apple apps as I have basic consumer needs.

I dig the laid back approach! I just bought a base model M1 Mini that I'll be using as a "bridge" of sorts toward my next M-based Mac. My primary use-case is Logic Pro X and from every benchmark I've seen so far it absolutely screams and spanks my fully maxed out 2014 15-inch MBP (which is expected - that is 6 years old after all), but for $699? This is the first time I've ever said that Apple devices are actually priced in a way that seems to good to be true! I have to stick with my tried and true 2014 MBP for now because a lot of my plugins aren't supported on M1, but I can't wait to plug the new M1 Mini into my 65-inch OLED in my family room and sit back with a MIDI controller creating scratch tracks all night long. In a world where tech started to feel like it was stagnating, Apple comes along and throws a massive wrench in the mix. This is good for everyone, competition is good and stagnation is bad. My Mini comes in tomorrow and it feels like I'm a kid during Christmas Eve! Anyway, I dig your style, liked and subbed! Keep it up!

Optimization, optimization, optimization... This is already what a lot of other FIpostrs are not making clear to their viewers, as you mention very clearly, straight shootouts are almost pointless to intel machines, and from your early test, it really shows how far the new archectiture can be pushed by the developers utilizing the M1 to it's entireity, and simply comparing raw speed isn't really the best way. Apple 'pro' software such as Final Cut Pro and Logic which have now been specifically designed to take full advantage of what the M1 can offer are already starting to show. Fast forward a year or two when the majority of popular applications fully support the M1 & Metal and truly optimized for it, I think we will be in a proper new era of personal computing. Whist we will also be filling Apple's deep pockets, hopefully this will bring the entry level a lot lower (example is the new Mac Mini at $699USD), and maybe even the highest price point far-far lower too, closing the gap between entry level, and pro. Great video Dave (again)! Please look at doing a couple of longer tests to see how the thermals hold up under a sustained work load.

If you really want to stress-test the 16GB M1 mini, download and install Eve Online and see if it runs. If it does, then start up Safari and see if the fan heads to 100% RPM as happens on the 2018 mini (that's a recognized bug). If not, then you can at least see how a Windows 3D game emulated in wine runs on the M1. My guess is that, even without the 100% RPM bug, Eve + Safari (Eve is a complicated game that requires an open browser to consult the forums on how to do things), is going to be heating up the M1 in ways that you won't see with anything else you've ever benchmarked.

How well do x86 architecture print drivers install and run on Rosetta I wonder - especially for perfectly serviceable printers but slightly older printers for which the manufacturer isn't going to update that driver for Big Sur / Apple Silicon?

2? how about 4 with 10 CPU cores high performance only and 16 GPU's per socket. So a total of 40 CPU at say 3.5 to 4GHz and 64 GPU cores. I'm sure they can up the ram to 64GB and it perform as well as a 128 or 256GB of ram in a standard PC. Apple has headroom here. Even if they just doubled current spects it would blow away most anything x86 can do. If they up the clock frequency just a tad to 3.5 or 3.7GHz. It would be a very scary fast machine. I'm hoping they create an expansion card out of their GPU. Something with 128 cores and 8-32GB of ram for a tower. I'm sure it would compete well with nvidia or AMD.

mine is dell u2720q, same usb-c issue with intel mac mini and macbook pro 16" . if you can pass filefault pass by blind typing it, display comes when os is booted properly.

For you youngsters, my Atari 800xl and 1050 disk drive cost the same as this Mac mini. And that’s in 1984 dollars.

@Niko Yochum Not at all - I think it's great that these CPUs can be pushed like this! I find the GB5 averages are usually a bit under what they should be. The results get skewed down by folks running the benchmark at the same time as a bunch of other apps, or whilst on laptop battery. Fancy sharing those 5800X scores? 😁
Niko Yochum
Niko Yochum Uukausi sitten
@Constant Geekery FWIW, my 5800x scored higher out of the box. Overall great review! Please don’t take this as me being a hater, I’m just a pedant.
Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
I don't include those results - I'm talking about out-of-the-box comparisons. There are some very odd systems appearing there, and it includes overclocking/water cooling etc. The average GB5 scores for the CPUs on that list are somewhat lower.

On a different note, one interesting test might or might not be copying files over the network. That is actually the only thing I don't like so far. I know my TrashCan is fast enough, but copying files from the M1 isn't giving me what I was expecting.

These new Macs look amazing but I think I will wait for the update to the 16" MacBook Pro. I just love the larger display on the laptop and the battery life is pretty solid. With Apple Silicon it should be a real beast of a machine.

Thanks for the warning about USB-C monitor. I have a Dell USB-C monitor (though it does have HDMI) I plan to use a second Dell monitor via HDMI. I wonder what is going to happen when I plug both in regarding start-up. I’m hoping to avoid the issue you are having.
Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
It’s pretty frustrating. I will do more testing. I guess it’s not the end of the world to have to plug it in after startup on HDMI, but I’d prefer not to have that annoyance.

I also have a Dell monitor however mine is an ultrawide. I had similar issues but found that it works perfectly if I plug the usbc and hdmi at the same time. I’m not sure if that would help as we have different monitors but I thought I’d mention it. Cheers!

The apple haters say that the M1 macs perform only just as well or slightly better than a Windows PC. In the reviews I've seen so far, and there are a lot of them, the M1 performs really well, especially since the M1 is the cheapest entry-level version of the mac line. Performs equally well and often better than more expensive mid and sometimes high end machines. I think next year the midrange and high end ranges will flatten everything in computer land.

So here is my question. I have the Mac Pro 2013 3.5 - 6 Core with 64GB of ram and a 2TB HD. Thinking of getting the M1. I think that you may have a similar Mac Pro. I only use it for productivity: Excel (Multiple Sheets open) Word documents, Adobe Photoshop Elements open all the time and Safari with up to 20 websites open. Your thoughts on the M1 vs the Mac Pro given my situation? Thanks and appreciate the input!1

Constant Geekery
Constant Geekery Uukausi sitten
I’d say the M1 would be a good deal quicker for the majority of that sort of workflow, but I’ve yet to do really thorough testing.
