Check out the Wilson / Angle Grinder t-shirt design project here:
Tried to invite you a little bit more behind the scenes of the cooking show in this one.
Redesigning the Marble divider and a lot of other parts for the Marble Machine X was not an easy decision to make - but absolutely necessarry to make the machine function. Still after years of working with marbles I am still underestimating the impact of the amount of repetitions of marble drops that are needed to work flawlessly on the marble machine X, if the fail chance is 0000,1 % and we have 100 000 repetitions the chance of failure is too high.
Designing something that fixes this might seem like a backlash but after accepting facts it is the fastest way forward. thanks for following the build have a great day// Martin

maybe grind the end of the bolts into an angle (hehe) so there is less of a likelihood of marbles getting pressed and stuck against it when playing it by hand and not pulling out far enough.

circular tubes like a car spring? and they all come out same angle to connect to same angle so u could lay in pipes like bread slices. More marbles facing downward angle of course will increase tension also speed On top u could use a double door one in front one in back a 2 door drop from about 4 marbles on top, aleviates top and bottom forces? just 2 cents

I really enjoy watching you work the problem out and your explanation of lowering the water in a lake. My best friend and I have this ongoing discussion of all the work you have to do to get to the work you need to do. It all has to be done and it all adds to your experience and knowledge. The hours I spend solving a problem today can result in solving another problem down the road in only a fraction of the time. I'm am totally amazed by the level of genius on display in what you're doing. I look forward to the finished product and hope to see you playing the MMX live one day.

I got about half way through, and I just kept thinking... design a 2 lane top part that the marble will roll down the left, and fall into the hole (pipe) on the right if there isn't a marble sticking up, but if there is it will just keep going as it will bounce off that spot and will keep going... Or option 2, have it fill from the other end. It rolls down to the far end and goes into the last hole. now, once that is full, the marble will come down there, lose all the speed when it hits the last marble, and then fall into the 2nd to the last tube... Until it is full and a marble is sticking up on the top... Keep going and you have all of them filled... If one is played, that will be refilled with the marbles waiting along the path. This also solves the issue with the last one not having enough marbles - it will have a whole row of them up to the very top of the first tube. In fact, any one that is played at any location is instantly filled by the marble dropping sideways into the tube and them all shifting down. Shouldn't be too hard to design.. BTW: I'm very impressed with this, it is the kind of thing my brother's and i designed when we were kids... except for the music part...

Simplification of a system's part reduces the effect that the innacuracies in a system cause. The more parts, the more innacuracies are stacking onto each other. So, the less parts (the simplier a system), the less relevance are innacuracies of, and the more reliable a part becomes, I would assume.

It strikes me that one error is that you have possibly been too fast to move on to building out the 38 versions of new designs, instead of maybe testing the single version more thoroughly. I guess it's a kind of meta-procrastination: building the 38 copies is work, certainly, but it gives your brain a rest.

I was about to add a comment suggesting looking into shotgun magazine tube interrupter design and then you came up with something very similar... the only difference is that you could move the interrupter paw instead of moving the tube. Basically, the handle attaches to the interrupter, at default position, interrupter is out of the way, when the handle is pulled, it first pulls the interrupter into the tube, closing it off, then, the interrupter pulls on the gate, opening it to allow one item out. Here's a diagram of what I was describing. The interrupter and the gate can be made out of metal sheet/plate with a hole punched in it, and then ride in a wooden channel. In fact the interrupter could even be just a metal wire bent to shape. (since the functioning bit is just the back edge of the plate in the previous design).

You might want to add some sound dampening to your matrix sentinels. First, machine the ends down (remove the threading) of the 6mm bolts that the marbles hit initially, down to fit a silicone tube/sleeve you can put on the end of them that is the same diameter as the threaded bolt. That way the marble hits a soft silicone on the way down. Next, the drop from the bolt down onto the plywood, drill in a small 3-4mm hole (about the size of a pencil end eraser) and put in a rubber bumper (a pencil eraser would actually work) and cut it flush with the plywood. Since the marbles are sphere's, they would hit the rubber bumper, deadening the sound and let the matrix cycle back into position since it's flush. If you did this during construction, it would make it so you didn't have to go back and do it again and your sentinels would be that much more silent. Nylon or delrin might even be quieter than wood for the assembly, something you might want to test. I'm not sure how critical silence is for the machine, but you've spent a lot of time quieting it down, so thought I'd chime in with an idea here.

Ok, I'm glad I'm not going crazy, because a few months back you spent all this work making those "grey parts" quieter and I kept thinking "Isn't this part obsolete now because every channel has a matrix sentinal? Why is he spending time on this?". I feel vindicated. I'm also only 7 minutes into this 44 minute video so I could be made a fool of later...

You will probably solve this. Rework. Dont see one solution and accept the fail. A recommendation is to not see anything as "temporary" and tbh you are running one version. If you redo anything, save the old stuff and look back on what made the new part better or worse.

I'm not sure how I feel about pushing the marble around as part of the gate. That's why the whole system was jamming in the first place, right? We only really care that at most one marble is permitted through at a time, so why not use a thinner metal plate to just cut off the normal flow of marbles? Something like this: Still, the thing appears to work beautifully, and as I try to picture how it might jam, nothing comes to mind... so, knock on wood!

The idea about having "dumb parts doing only one task, and do it well" is something you find in the computer world. More specifically it's called the UNIX philosophy. I love the music when you were replacing the first matrix sentinel, it sounded hopeful and happy, it was the perfect theme for plan 4 as even though it will be hard, it is such a big improvement that you know you need to just push through it until it is done and you can see how great you did.
Mond Wolf
Mond Wolf 3 kuukautta sitten
Martin, I would suggest that when you finally get a solid final design for the machine, you remove any part constructed of plywood, and replace it with metal or composite. Plywood, or any wood will swell and change size with humidity and weather. You want something that is chemically dead and doesn't change over time. I wouldn't do this until you've got all the design locked in, due to cost. Good luck, keep hammering away, but remember Perfect is the enemy of Good.
